How To Remove Black Mold From Carpet

Mold is a relatively common problem among certain households throughout the world, specifically those located in geographic areas with high levels of humidity. Mold growth can spread because of plumbing leaks, broken pipes, or humid rooms with little ventilation. Mold consists of a specific type of fungus that collects and develops along the floors or walls of household areas; typically the bathroom, basement, or kitchen.

There are several different types of mold, including black mold and green mold. However, black mold carries along with it a variety of potential health problems that may appear after toxins released by the mold are inhaled. Bronchitis, asthma, and respiratory infections are all negative health conditions that can develop or be aggravated through direct exposure to black mold growth. For this reason as well as for simple matters of hygiene and cleanliness, mold should be eliminated immediately after its presence is noted within the household area. Here are several simple steps outlining how to remove black mold from your carpet.

1. Preparation

Protecting yourself from the dangerous toxins produced by black mold spores is imperative. In order to accomplish this, you will need to completely cover your body and wear a protective mask. Dust filtering masks work quite well to minimize the inhalation of toxins. You should wear gloves as well. Also, ensure that any additional occupants of the household area will not be present during the mold cleanup operation.

2. Mold elimination

The next step in the mold elimination process involves containing the entire infected area. Areas prone to ventilation (underneath doorways, windows, vents, etc.) should be isolated by sealing them off with plastic sheeting held firmly in place with duct tape. This will prevent spores of black mold on carpet from escaping outside the isolated area.

Cleaning black mold on carpet is then performed first by applying a preliminary wash consisting of soap and hot water to the infected area. Scrub the carpet with a very stiff brush and place any materials containing mold spores in a restrictive bag to be disposed of after the cleaning has been completed. Afterwards, a disinfectant solution should be applied to the carpet. This solution can be homemade (water and bleach) or commercial (mold cleaners). Let the disinfectant sit for several hours and then rinse it off with hot water. Allow the room to dry or speed up the process using a dehumidifier or vacuum.

By following the above steps, the removal of black mold can be accomplished easily and without any additional complications. Remember to take any necessary health precautions before attempting to remove mold, as the toxin concentration is much higher when the infected area is being cleaned. Correct preparation and proper following of cleaning procedures will help to ensure that mold growth does not reoccur in the future.

I agree with protection part of your article. You certainly want a mask that will keep small spore out of your respiratory system. Also if you are having problems with a rug, clean it and then let it dry on both sides out on your driveway in the sun. The UV rays from the sun will kill any living mold that it is exposed.
